The Unveiling Ceremony & Founding Meeting for the Next Generation Power System Research Center Co-constructed by Huairou Laboratory and China Southern Power Grid Being Grandly Held

On the morning of July 12, the Unveiling Ceremony & Founding Meeting of the Next Generation Power System Research Center Co-constructed by Huairou Laboratory and China Southern Power Grid were held in the Future Science City Office of Huairou Laboratory. Sui Zhenjiang, member of the Party Leadership Group of the People's Government of Beijing Municipality and Party Secretary of Huairou Laboratory, Meng Zhenping, Chairman of China Southern Power Grid, Tang Guangfu, Director of Huairou Laboratory and Academician of the CAE, Li Licheng, Academician of the CAE, and leaders from relevant departments and divisions of the Ministry of Science and Technology attended the ceremony.

Huairou Laboratory constitutes an important part in China's strategic scientific and technological force. It aims to become a highland that can bring together first-class talents at home and abroad, play a major leading role in collaborative researches, and cultivate technological innovation strength that can represent the national level, is recognized by international peers, and has the discourse power in the international arena. China Southern Power Grid, as an important state-owned enterprise managed by the central government, provides power supply service for the five southern provinces as well as Hong Kong SAR and Macao SAR, with a power supply area of 1 million square kilometers. It has built and operated the world's first ±800kV HVDC transmission project and occupies a world leading position in the field of ultra-high voltage transmission.

At the ceremony, leaders of Huairou Laboratory and China Southern Power Grid announced the formal establishment of the Next Generation Power System Research Center of Huairou Laboratory and read out the appointment documents for the institutions.Sui Zhenjiang and Meng Zhenping jointly unveiled the co-constructed research institutions and delivered speeches respectively.

Sui Zhenjiang expressed that the co-construction of research institutions by Huairou Laboratory and China Southern Power Grid was a concrete action to implement the decisions and deployment of the CPC Central Committee and a vivid practice of carrying out thematic education. The Next Generation Power System Research Center is the first research center jointly built by Huairou Laboratory and a central enterprise, which is of milestone significance. He hoped that the Research Center would focus on national mission, unswervingly implement national tasks, strive to break the "stuck neck" problems in flexible transmission of electric power, and strongly support the construction of a new power system. Meanwhile, the Research Center should strengthen institutional and mechanism innovation, build a collaborative innovation mechanism with clear interfaces, complementary advantages and clear division of labor, and innovate the talent recruitment and employment mechanisms according to the needs of building strategic scientific and technological strength. It should promote multi-disciplinary intersections and industry-university-research collaboration, and explore implementation paths of the new system for mobilizing the resources nationwide.

Meng Zhenping said that the joint effort of the two parties to establish the Next Generation Power System Center was an important measure to deeply implement the innovation-driven development strategy and guarantee national energy security, which would effectively promote in-depth industry-university-research integration and provide impetus for China Southern Power Grid to enhance core competitiveness and core functions and build a world-class enterprise. China Southern Power Grid will take the establishment of the center as an opportunity to give full play to the advantages of the new system for mobilizing the resources nationwide, accelerate the gathering of innovative elements, and carry out joint innovative research to tackle scientific and technological problems with a focus on national strategic needs. It will continuously improve the result transfer and industrialization capabilities, continue to strengthen talent introduction and cultivation, and jointly build China's strategic scientific and technological capabilities.

This ceremony marks that the research institutions co-constructed by Huairou Laboratory and China Southern Power Grid have officially entered the establishment and operation stage. The two parties will revitalize the superior innovative resources of the central enterprise with the new institutional mechanism of Huairou Laboratory, and build a sound platform under the joint construction and management principles. They will tackle key scientific and technological problems through organized joint efforts and solid work, and build the Research Center into an international first-class research institution that can embody national will, realize national mission, and represent national level, thereby contributing to China's sci-tech self-reliance and self-strengthening at higher levels in the energy field.
