Huairou Laboratory and CHN Energy Establish Clean Energy Research Center (Institute)

On August 9, 2024, Huairou Laboratory and CHN Energy Investment Group (CHN Energy) jointly inaugurated the Clean Energy Research Center (Institute) at a ceremony held in Beijing. Yu Yingjie, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Beijing Municipality and Liu Guoyue, Chairman of CHN Energy unveiled the plaque to mark the official establishment of the center. Yan Guochun, Deputy General Manager of CHN Energy and Wang Li, Deputy Secretary-General of Huairou Laboratory announced the center’s establishment document and personnel appointment respectively. Tang Guangfu, Director of Huairou Laboratory and Academician of the CAE presided over the ceremony.

Yu Yingjie stated that the joint establishment of the Clean Energy Research Center by Huairou Laboratory and CHN Energy is a vivid demonstration and exploration of the new type of national scientific research system, which will help enhance high-quality technological supply in the energy sector, promote the transformation of China's energy structure, and seize the strategic high ground in future energy development. Regarding the jointly-established institute, the following four aspects are crucial: First, clear objectives must be set, always focusing on the major strategic issues in the energy field that are of the utmost concern to the CPC Central Committee, and jointly tackling core technologies to complete scientific research tasks with high standards. Second, collaboration must be strengthened, leveraging the technical accumulations and advantages of both parties in the energy field to promote the construction of an efficient collaborative innovation system and the transformation and application of scientific research achievements, driving technological iteration and industry development. Third, bold practice is needed, with both parties jointly exploring the management model for major national science and technology projects and collaborative cooperation models, continuously enhancing the construction of core teams, and improving the effectiveness of investment in innovation resources. Fourth, application-oriented efforts should be adhered to, pushing for the implementation of more scientific and technological achievements and promoting green and low-carbon development in Beijing.

Liu Guoyue congratulated the center on its establishment and expressed gratitude to the experts and scholars who have long supported the company. He stated that CHN Energy will fully leverage its integrated advantages in energy generation, multi-modal transportation system, energy conversion, marketing network, energy storage and etc, as well as its advantages in integrated innovation and application, coordinate the four major strategic tasks of energy security, energy economy, low-carbon energy development, and energy technology, and accelerate the formation of national strategic scientific and technological strength. First, focus on key national security areas, conducting basic research aimed at major national strategies and common industrial needs, deepening pragmatic cooperation between both parties, and co-establishing the Clean Energy Research Center at a high level. Second, innovate on systems and mechanisms, conducting original, transformative, iterative, and disruptive scientific research and technological breakthroughs in key directions, creating an open ecosystem with the participation of multiple innovation entities. Third, integrate industry, academia, research, and application, creating a three-in-one model for the transformation of scientific and technological achievements, involving "research institutions' R&D - technology companies' incubation - industry companies' adoption." The Group will actively integrate into the global innovation network and enhance the ability and level of global innovation resource allocation.

During the meeting, the head of the jointly established institute presented future development ideas, and CAE Academician Liu Jizhen spoke as a representative of scientists.

Leaders from relevant departments of the Ministry of Science and Technology, representatives from the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission and the Administrative Commission of Zhongguancun Science Park, responsible persons from relevant departments and subsidiaries of CHN Energy, and representatives from the functional departments, affiliated units, and research teams of Huairou Laboratory participated in the meeting.
