Professor Bai Chunli Visits Shanxi Research Institute of Huairou Laboratory and Delivers an Academic Report

On June 23, Professor Bai Chunli, Member and former President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), visited Shanxi Research Institute Huairou Laboratory for an inspection and research tour, and delivered an academic report. Sun Yuhan, Director of Shanxi Research Institute, accompanied Professor Bai and provided an introduction to the progress of the base’s construction. Vice Chairman of the Shanxi Association for Science and Technology, Tan Lihong, and members of the Shanxi Base leadership team also participated in the research activities.

Professor Bai visited various scientific research and experimental platforms, gaining an in-depth understanding of the research layout and progress in key core technology breakthroughs. He engaged in extensive discussions with frontline researchers from different teams and was briefed on the operational progress of the Shanxi Base.


Bai acknowledged the phased achievements of the Shanxi Base and emphasized that the base must strengthen its mission to contribute to national strategic scientific and technological power. He urged the full utilization of institutional and mechanistic advantages, deepening the reform of the scientific and technological system, enhancing the base’s ability to attract global talent, and promoting the deep integration of technological innovation and industrial innovation. Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of breaking through core technologies related to coal-based energy and contributing to high-level scientific and technological self-reliance in the energy sector.

After the inspection and research activities, Bai delivered an academic report titled “The Development Trends of Global Scientific and Technological Frontiers.” He provided a comprehensive overview of the latest developments in frontier technologies, such as dark matter, quantum science, artificial intelligence, and new energy materials, from macro, micro, and meso perspectives. He also discussed the historic achievements and transformations in China’s scientific and technological innovation over the past decade.

Professor Bai encouraged researchers to remain confident, stay focused on the global scientific and technological frontiers, prioritize the major economic battlefield, address national strategic needs, and be mindful of the health and well-being of the people. He urged them to implement the innovation-driven development strategy and contribute to building a powerful scientific and technological nation. Nearly 300 people participated in the report session.
